Labeled simply "Stanley Harris, Wash.," this portrait is known only by the sitter's name and a place abbreviation, and the record notes that even this title comes from unverified data on the negative sleeve. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio based in Washington, D.C., made large numbers of negatives of local people, buildings and events in the early twentieth century, and this glass plate is dated to about 1925. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coating, a common sign of age in glass negatives of this era.
