The statue of Commodore John Barry, the Irish-born officer often called the father of the American Navy, stands at the center of this 1924 scene, with members of the Sons of the Revolution gathered to mark the anniversary of his birth. Barry commanded ships during the Revolutionary War and later served in the new U.S. Navy, so commemorations of him often drew patriotic and hereditary societies like this one. The National Photo Company made thousands of glass negatives of American streets, monuments, and civic events in this period, and this one captures the ceremonial character of such occasions. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which add a faint, weathered texture to the scene.
