A December 12, 1921 sitting is the detail that sets this glass negative apart. Its title lists five surnames, Root, Underwood, Hughes, Lodge, and Miles, but the Library of Congress notes that the names come from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, so the identities should be treated as provisional. The National Photo Company, which worked largely in Washington, D.C., during the early twentieth century, made portraits and documentary pictures of officials, visitors, and public events. The collection reached the Library through a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Viewers should expect streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coatings.
