A speaker named Lodge addresses the Massachusetts Society on May 4, 1923, according to a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative, though that title has not been independently verified. The surname may point to Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts, a prominent public figure of the period. The picture survives as a 5 by 7 inch glass negative from the company's large collection of event photographs, which documented life in Washington and elsewhere in the early twentieth century. Streaks and small blemishes are visible because the original coatings have deteriorated naturally over time, a common condition for glass plates of this age.
