The title on this glass negative names the Social Hygiene Society, a label the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, though it has not been independently verified. The society belonged to the early twentieth-century social hygiene movement, which campaigned for public education on venereal disease and sexual health and drew wide attention in the years after World War I. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made many negatives of this kind during the 1910s and 1920s. Note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from deterioration in the original coating.
