A May 4, 1923 tree planting by the Massachusetts Society is the detail that sets this glass negative apart. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that produced news and commercial photographs in the early twentieth century, made the plate, and its collection was given to the Library of Congress in 1947. Tree-planting ceremonies were a common way for social and civic groups of the era to mark public occasions. The title comes from the negative's original data and has not been independently verified. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coatings, not from the scene itself.
