The title names a particular tree, the "Tree that Owns Itself," a large old oak in Adairsville, Georgia, whose local legend holds that the land around it was deeded to the tree itself. The American Forestry Association, a conservation group founded in 1875, promoted such notable trees in the early twentieth century as part of its push to protect American forests. The picture was made as a glass negative by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented American places for sale as postcards and prints. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass, from deterioration of its original coating, are visible in the record and are part of the negative's history.
