A 1923 glass negative from the National Photo Company, dated May 16, records a structure whose title, "Sale of Tickets Shrine," is unverified and may be incomplete, since the word after "Country" is uncertain. The company was a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., known for news and street views in the early twentieth century, and glass plates like this one were the standard working medium of the day. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the plate, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
