A barbecue held on October 8, 1923, is the subject here, though the title comes from a note the National Photo Company wrote on the negative and has not been independently verified. "Shrine" most likely refers to the Shriners, the fraternal order whose local groups often held large picnics and barbecues, but the record does not say more. The National Photo Company was a commercial photography firm in Washington, D.C., that documented civic life, and Herbert A. French gave this glass negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original coating are visible on the plate.
