The title on this glass negative, "Automobile executives," comes from the National Photo Company's own notes and has not been independently verified, though the October 5, 1923 date is taken from a related negative. The Washington, D.C., firm worked as a commercial and news photographer through the 1910s and 1920s, recording officials, events and business figures for clients and newspapers. In 1923 the automobile industry was expanding quickly, and the Ford Model T still dominated American roads, so portraits of industry leaders capture a business in rapid growth. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coating, a common condition for negatives of this age.
