Few subjects in this collection show the rise of the motorcar as plainly as an automobile engine, with the machinery itself as the focus rather than the vehicle around it. Library staff devised the title, and the negative dates from between 1912 and 1930, when motoring was spreading quickly through American towns and cities. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in those years, recorded the city and its surroundings on glass plates like this one. Viewers should notice the streaks and blemishes in the coating, which come from natural deterioration of the original emulsion rather than from the photographer's choices.
