Dr. Gary Grayson is the named subject of this 1914 glass negative, made at the Washington Horse Show in the nation's capital. Grayson was a Navy physician who served as personal physician to President Woodrow Wilson, so a portrait tied to a Washington equestrian event places him among the city's social and official crowds of the period. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington in the early twentieth century, produced large numbers of such event pictures, and its negatives now preserve a dense record of daily life in the capital. Note that the caption's identification comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified.
