Pennsylvania Avenue, the ceremonial route between the Capitol and the White House, is the setting here, captured on February 21, 1919, a few months after the armistice ended the First World War. Parades along this avenue marked homecomings, war loan drives, and other public occasions in the period, and the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington street life in the early twentieth century, made many such views. The glass negative itself shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image's tonal detail.
