A February 1919 parade along Pennsylvania Avenue, the broad route linking the Capitol and the White House, sets this glass negative apart as a specific street scene from the National Photo Company's Washington holdings. The date falls a few months after the Armistice ended fighting in Europe, when returning troops and civic processions often filled the avenue. The company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the early twentieth century, documented such events for wide circulation. The plate also shows streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration of its coating, which are worth keeping in mind when studying its finer details.
