The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that made a large body of street and event views in the early twentieth century, recorded this parade in the nation's capital, though the record gives no route, date or marching units. The title comes from the studio's own label on the negative, which the Library of Congress notes is unverified, so the exact occasion is open to question. Parades were a staple of Washington life between the 1910s and 1930s, drawing crowds down Pennsylvania Avenue for patriotic observances, civic groups and military processions. The glass plate itself shows the streaks and surface blemishes typical of aging emulsion, which are part of what makes it a record of the period's technology as well as its streets.
