A parade in the nation's capital during the preparedness movement gives this 1916 view its particular interest. Calls for a stronger military grew after the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 and amid tensions along the Mexican border, as civic groups pressed the country to build up its defenses before the United States entered the war in Europe. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington in these years, recorded many street scenes of this kind. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coatings, and its title and date come from unverified information on a related negative.
