The subject is the American Federation of Labor, which held a dedication in Washington, D.C., in 1916. Founded in 1886 and led for decades by Samuel Gompers, the AFL had become the country's largest federation of trade unions by then. The National Photo Company, which recorded many Washington buildings and public occasions, made this view on a glass negative. Streaks and blemishes from the aging coating are visible, a common sign of early glass plates.
