Marchers filed through Washington, D.C., in 1916 as part of the preparedness movement, a campaign urging the United States to build up its army and navy as war raged in Europe. The parade's title and date come from unverified notes made by the National Photo Company, the commercial studio that documented the capital's streets and public events in the early twentieth century. The glass negative carries streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which give the image a faintly mottled texture. Those flaws are part of its physical history, and they show how these plates aged after more than a century.
