Few Washington street scenes from 1916 capture the nation's mood as directly as this glass negative of a preparedness parade. The preparedness movement pressed for a larger army and navy and for civilian training as tensions with Germany grew, and parades like this one drew marchers and onlookers to the capital before the United States entered World War I in April 1917. The National Photo Company made many such views of the city, and the image's streaks and blemishes come from the aging of its original coatings, a common trait of glass plates from this period.
