Titled "Field Move," this 1917 glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the capital in the early twentieth century. The record notes that the title is unverified and was written on the negative or its sleeve, so the subject is best read with caution. The United States was entering the First World War that year, and the company's street, government, and public-life views captured the city during that period. The glass support has also aged: streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating are visible. The negative was a gift from Herbert A. French to the Library of Congress in 1947.
