Fort Myer, on the high ground above the Potomac across from Washington, was one of the oldest posts in the Army and by about 1914 it was closely tied to the service's growing interest in aviation and horsemanship. The barracks shown here belong to that long-established garrison, a place where soldiers lived in tightly spaced brick and frame buildings while the post stood in what is now Arlington County. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington and its surroundings in the early twentieth century. Its glass negative carries the streaks and clouding typical of aging emulsions, which is worth noticing when comparing its detail with later prints.
