Fort Myer, on the high ground above the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia, has been an Army post since the Civil War, and it was the place where the Army first tested its flying machines under Orville and Wilbur Wright in 1908 and 1909. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that photographed government sites, soldiers and the capital's streets in the early twentieth century. The record dates it only to a window between 1909 and 1940, so the exact day is unknown, but the plate captures the post during that busy stretch. Its streaks and blemishes are the natural deterioration of the original coating, which is part of what a glass plate of this age looks like.
