The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed a wide range of people, buildings and events between the early 1900s and the 1930s, and this glass negative is one of its many surviving plates. The record gives only a broad title, "U.S. Army," and a date range of roughly 1909 to 1940, so the exact subject is uncertain; the title itself was supplied from unverified studio data written on the negative sleeve. Glass plates of this size were the standard working medium of commercial photographers of the period, and the streaks and blemishes noted in the record are typical of coatings that have deteriorated over the decades, which can still reveal much about early twentieth-century camera work.
