Few pictures in the National Photo Company collection show the Army's guns in action as plainly as this one, which is recorded only as artillery practice by U.S. Army troops. The National Photo Company made its living from commercial and news photography in Washington, D.C., during the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives from roughly 1909 to 1940 document everything from civic life to military training. The record gives a date range rather than a precise year, and the title comes from data the company wrote on the negative sleeve, so the exact occasion is unconfirmed. The glass plate itself shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which is typical of negatives from this era.
