Fort Myer, the cavalry post on the Virginia side of the Potomac in Arlington, is the setting for this glass negative of a band of the 15th Cavalry, U.S. Army. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington-area scenes in the early twentieth century, made the image sometime between 1912 and 1930, a period when mounted units and their musicians were a regular part of life at the post. Because the negative is glass, it can show streaks and blemishes from the breakdown of its original coatings, which are worth keeping in mind when you examine the image.
