Military bands were a regular part of garrison life, and this glass negative shows a band of the 15th Cavalry at Fort Myer, the Army post on the heights above the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia. Fort Myer sits beside Arlington National Cemetery and was named for Albert J. Myer, chief of the Army Signal Corps. The National Photo Company, which documented American landmarks and scenes, made this image sometime between 1912 and 1930, when the post housed mounted troops. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, so the finer details of the uniforms and instruments are best read with that in mind.
