The negative's title names Gen. Josef Haller, a Polish army officer who led the Blue Army, a force of volunteers raised in France during World War I and sent to Poland in 1919. The date on the sleeve, October 8, 1923, places the sitting several years after that campaign, when Haller was a prominent figure in Polish public life. The title comes from the National Photo Company's own notes and has not been independently verified. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the decay of its original coating, which is typical of negatives from this period.
