Sam Woodfill, a sergeant who earned the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Argonne Forest in October 1918, is the figure that sets this group apart. He appears alongside Gen. F.T. Hines, then head of the Veterans Bureau, Gen. L.M. Brett, and Sgt. Willie Sandlin. The picture was taken on September 5, 1924, by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public occasions in the capital between the world wars. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural decay of its original coating, a reminder of how fragile these records are.
