This view shows Samuel Gompers's body being carried into the American Federation of Labor building in Washington on December 16, 1924, three days after he died while traveling in San Antonio, Texas. Gompers had led the federation since its founding in 1886 and built American trade unionism around skilled workers and collective bargaining. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, made the negative, and its glass plate shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in the original coating.
