This photograph records the arrival of the body of Maj. R.W. Imbrie at the Washington Navy Yard on September 29, 1924. Imbrie, an Army officer, had died in Japan that month after being attacked in Tokyo, and his return to the United States drew public attention amid strained relations between the two countries. The National Photo Company, a Washington news picture service active in the 1920s, made many such press images of official and ceremonial events in the capital. Look for the crowd and the formal handling of the casket, which show how the government marked the return of its dead.
