This glass negative records three Army aviators, Lt. Leigh Wade, Maj. F.L. Martin, and Lt. L.P. Arnold, on April 27, 1925. Wade and Martin were both associated with the Army's 1924 round-the-world flight attempt, a demanding effort that helped establish long-distance military aviation. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, events, and everyday life in the nation's capital, made the image, and the record notes that the title came from data written on the negative or its sleeve and has not been verified. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings.
