The sitter is recorded as Dr. R. Sayers, and the negative is dated May 23, 1923, though the name came from the National Photo Company and has not been independently verified. The Washington, D.C., firm was known for portraits and scenes of the capital in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates later came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Because this is an original glass negative, it shows its age: the record notes streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration of the coating, which may also appear in prints made from it.
