Memorial Day ceremonies in the early 1920s drew crowds to cemeteries and town squares across the country, and this glass negative records one such gathering in 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that photographed events, street scenes and public life during these years, produced the image, and its collection now holds thousands of plates like it. The record's catalogers titled the negative by matching it to the dates and titles of neighboring plates in its range, so the subject rests on that sequence rather than a caption written at the time. Visitors should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
