Cardinal William O'Connell, archbishop of Boston, presides over the dedication of this memorial to nuns on September 20, 1924. O'Connell had been made a cardinal in 1911 and was one of the most prominent American Catholic leaders of his time. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded public events on glass negatives. The faint streaks and blemishes on this negative are typical of natural deterioration in its original coatings.
