The glass negative records the opening of a swimming pool at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on May 30, 1925, a summer milestone for the club. Founded in 1911 just across the District line, Columbia was a social hub for Washington families, and the new pool added to its recreational offerings. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, made the picture. Its plates show how suburban clubs served as gathering places between the world wars. The date and title come from notes on the negative that the record describes as unverified.
