The title points to a tree on the grounds of Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., but the name comes from unverified data, so the origin of the nickname remains uncertain. Walter Reed, named for the Army physician who led yellow fever research, was established in 1909 and grew into a major military medical center. The National Photo Company made many views of the capital for tourists and postcards in the years around 1908 to 1919, so this scene offers a glimpse of the hospital grounds in that period. Look for streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
