Dr. Walter Hough of the Smithsonian stands at an arrowhead quarry in Rock Creek Park, the wooded valley in northwest Washington, D.C. Hough was an ethnologist who studied Native American tools and crafts, and the picture records his fieldwork in the capital in March 1926. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, made the image as a 4 by 5 inch glass negative. Its streaks and blemishes come from the decay of the original coating. The title repeats the studio's notes, which have not been independently verified.
