A card-weaving demonstration at the Smithsonian Institution, dated August 5, 1925, is the subject of this glass negative. Card weaving, also called tablet weaving, uses stiff square cards with punched corners to guide warp threads into narrow patterned bands, a method found in many cultures for centuries. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the capital's institutions and public life in the early twentieth century. Faint streaks and blemishes across the glass reflect natural deterioration of its original coatings.
