Herr Dump Car Mfg. Co. is the subject named on this glass negative, though that title comes from data the National Photo Company noted on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. Dump cars were railway vehicles whose bodies tipped to empty bulk loads such as coal, ore, or gravel, and they were essential to mining, quarrying, and track construction in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm, produced a large commercial body of work from about 1900 into the 1930s. Streaks and blemishes across the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coatings.
