Herr Dump Car Mfg. Co. is the title on this glass negative, though the National Photo Company supplied it and it has not been independently verified. Dump cars were rail wagons whose beds tipped or opened to release bulk loads such as coal, ore, or gravel, so makers of them served mining, quarrying, and railroad construction. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, produced many commercial and documentary views, and the streaks and blemishes on the glass likely come from age in its original coatings.
