Greta Garbo and director Mauritz Stiller appear together in this glass negative from August 17, 1925, the day the pair arrived in New York after leaving Sweden for Hollywood. Stiller had discovered Garbo in Stockholm and directed her in films such as "Gösta Berlings saga," and their arrival drew press attention as the two Swedish filmmakers entered the American studio system. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. firm that documented news and public life in the early twentieth century, made the picture, and the negative shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass plates.
