A group of members of the American Hungarian Civic Club posed for this portrait on December 20, 1922, recorded on a glass negative made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active in the early twentieth century. Civic clubs like this one gave Hungarian immigrants and their American-born children a place to meet, organize community events, and connect with civic life during a period of heavy immigration. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating.
