Taken in Washington on October 17, 1923, this group portrait shows members of the Gridiron Club, the capital's association of newspaper correspondents, best known for its satirical annual dinners where members performed skits and songs that poked fun at public officials. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented the city in the early twentieth century, made the image as a small glass negative. Look closely and you may see streaks and blemishes, which come from the coatings deteriorating over time rather than from anything in the scene itself.
