A group portrait labeled simply "Indiana group" and dated December 20, 1922, survives here as a single glass negative, a format widely used by commercial photographers in the early twentieth century. The title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and it has not been verified, so the sitters and the occasion remain uncertain. The company, based in Washington, D.C., photographed a broad range of people and events during the 1910s and 1920s. Faint streaks and blemishes on the plate reflect the gradual breakdown of its original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
