Catalogued only as number 44909, this glass negative is dated December 14, 1922, though the record notes that the date comes from unverified information supplied by the National Photo Company. The Washington, D.C., firm produced a large body of commercial views of the capital and its visitors in the early twentieth century, and plates like this were often printed for newspapers and tourist sales. The surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age. Those marks record how the negative has aged since Herbert A. French donated it in 1947.
