Truman H. Newberry, a Michigan Republican, is the subject of this glass negative, which the National Photo Company likely made around 1922, the year he resigned from the U.S. Senate amid a dispute over campaign spending in his 1918 election. The company, a Washington studio that photographed officials, visitors and public events, produced many portraits of this kind for newspapers and agencies. The negative is worth a closer look for its condition: the streaks and blemishes come from the deterioration of its original coating, a common trait of glass plates from this era.
