Senator William J. Harris of Georgia posed with his family for this portrait, which the National Photo Company recorded on a glass negative in early July 1922. A Democrat, Harris was serving in the United States Senate at the time, and the Washington firm built much of its business on photographing officials, their households and visitors to the capital. The date comes from a related negative rather than from this plate, and the surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coatings, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
