This glass negative captures Senator Smith W. Brookhart of Iowa and Mrs. Brookhart, dated January 26, 1923, a winter day in Washington when Congress was in session and a steady stream of lawmakers and their families passed through the capital. Brookhart, a Republican who later built a reputation for independent, farm-minded politics, was one of the many public figures the National Photo Company recorded in its Washington studio during these years. The plate's title comes from the studio's own labeling, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified. Visible streaks and blemishes are typical of glass negatives whose original coatings have deteriorated over time.
