Taken on November 20, 1922, this glass negative records Senator S.W. Brookhart of Iowa, a Republican who had won his Senate seat in the midterm elections that autumn. A former congressman known for his support of farm and labor causes, he was part of the progressive wing of his party during the early 1920s. The portrait comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public life in the 1910s and 1920s. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the natural deterioration of the original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image.
