This glass negative shows Henry Cabot Lodge, the Massachusetts senator, identified in its caption as taking part in the disarmament conference. The date recorded for it, November 12, 1921, is the day the Washington Naval Conference opened, when the United States hosted nine powers to discuss limiting naval arms. Lodge, then chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was one of the American delegates. The National Photo Company, a Washington press studio, produced many such views of officials and events during the period, so the image offers a direct record of the conference's public face. Faint streaks from the aging glass coating are visible.
